Deandra Wright

Criminal Justice Major

Deandra Wright is not your typical college student. Originally from Jamaica and hailing from the small community of Petersville, Deandra made the bold move to attend Cape Cod Community College (4Cs) as an international student.

When asked why she chose 4Cs, Deandra says it was because of the affordability and the college's open and accepting culture. "I did my research and knew that I could be myself here," she said.

Deandra's major is criminal justice, which she chose because of the endless career opportunities it offers and the chance to help protect people. But her journey at 4Cs wouldn't have been as successful without the guidance and support of mentor, Harmony Carroll. "Without her, I honestly have no idea what I would do. I'm able to ask her anything and talk to her about anything. Once I call her, then that problem is gone," Deandra said.

Deandra is currently a Peer Mentor in the 4Cs4U/Success program where she helps students navigate their 4Cs journey. "My advisor, Harmony, never misses a chance to push me and let me know that it is something she knows I'm capable of doing. She told me all about the program and that she plays a part in it. Then and there, I knew I wanted to do it," she said.

Deandra doesn't have one favorite thing about 4Cs, but rather a hundred things. She loves the breathtaking campus, which reminds her of home in a little way, the amazing staff, and the friendly schoolmates.
When asked to give advice to new students,

Deandra said, "At first, you'll feel like you aren't able to talk to anyone. But you can. In your classes, simply say hi. Don't try too hard, and not even in a week or two, you'll feel like you've been at 4Cs for months or years, simply because of how accepting and friendly everyone is."

If you're a current student with a GPA of 3.5,
Deandra suggests becoming a peer mentor. "It can be a fun experience, plus you'll be helping your fellow schoolmates," she said. With students like Deandra at 4Cs, it's clear that the college is truly a welcoming and supportive place for all.
